Packing Guide

Planning and preparation

  1. Plan what you will pack. Items you do not use on a regular basis should be packed first.
  2. Generously line the container with paper and/or bubble wrap, as you will need to provide good cushion for your items. Use only clean paper, and pack all cartons tightly and securely with professional packing tape.
  3. Pack breakables and non-breakables separately and clearly label these cartons as "FRAGILE".
  4. Indicate which boxes contain essentials such as toiletries, utensils and non-perishable food, so you can find them easily after the move is complete.
  5. List the contents on the outside of each carton.
  6. Never pack flammable items or perishable food.

  1. Layer the box with bubble wrap, leaving space at the top of the box to fill in with wadded paper.
  2. Individually wrap each piece in paper, then bundle them together with a double layer of paper.
  3. Make sure there is no unfilled space by surrounding each bundle with crushed paper or plastic peanuts.
  4. Protect the rims of plates with an additional 2-3 inches of crushed paper on top, simultaneously creating a base for the next level.
  5. Smaller china like Saucers, soup bowls and small plates can make up that second layer.
  6. Place cups or glasses on top, upright as if you were placing them on the table.

Silverware

  1. Bundle silver together and then wrap the bundle in padding.
  2. Cushion the padded packs in the silver chest.
  3. Wrap the chest in clean paper.

Soft Goods/Bedding/Clothes

  1. Separate your pillows and sheets with layers of paper and pack them in lined containers.
  2. Use special wardrobe boxes. They will allow you to leave all your clothes on hangers and avoid wrinkles and tears.
  3. Tip: You can use some of the clothes and bedding as a cushion in other boxes.
  4. Tip: Store lampshades or other lightweight items together or with other soft goods to prevent damage.

Mirrors

  1. Place tape across the glass surface. This will hold the pieces in place if the mirror breaks.
  2. Wrap the mirror with cardboard and or bubble wrap and tape tightly.
  3. Use a well-padded flat box.
  4. Seal the box and mark it "FRAGILE".

Computers

  1. Color code wires and cables to make reconnecting them easier once you arrive at the new location.
  2. Use the original boxes for storing all the components.
  3. If you do not have the original boxes, make sure that there is plenty of paper and other padding inside the box.
  4. Ensure that cords and components are wrapped so they will not scratch the equipment.
  5. Make sure that the monitor is well cushioned with Styrofoam or blankets. The printer can be packed in a similar way, but you should remove the cartridges to prevent leakage.
  6. Tip 1: Do not forget to back up all your files and programs.
  7. Tip 2: Do not transport your computer CD's in a same box with magnetically active equipment.
  8. Seal boxes and mark them "FRAGILE".

Paintings/Pictures

  1. If you have glass picture frames, place tape across the glass surface. This will hold the pieces in place if the glass breaks. Tape bubble wrap around the painting.
  2. Place in a well-padded box.
  3. Seal boxes and mark them "FRAGILE".

Sculptures

  1. Place the sculpture wrapped in bubble wrap in a center of the box.
  2. Fill Styrofoam peanuts around it on all sides.
  3. Make sure the installation does not touch the sides of the box.
  4. Seal boxes and mark them "FRAGILE".

Washing Machine

  1. Check the manual for any specific moving instructions.
  2. Drain all the water and dry the interior.
  3. Remove all fittings, accessories and attachments and pack them separately.
  4. Place pillows, linens and clothes inside the basket. If you have small children, the basket will provide a safe heaven for their staffed animals.
  5. Add a box of baking soda to prevent mold.
  6. Place a towel between the sides of your washing machine and the tub, so that the tub is fixed in one place. You do not want anything moving during transport.
  7. Do not forget to tape the electrical cord and lid down and apply some outside padding to those areas.
  8. Do not forget to wash all your clothes 2-3 days before the move.

Dryer

  1. Check the manual for any specific moving instructions.
  2. Disconnect the exhaust hose, roll it up and place it inside the dryer basket.
  3. Tape the dryer door, electrical cord and the screen.
  4. Pad the outside of the machine.

Refrigerator

  1. Tip: Never take any perishable food items with you when you move.
  2. Check the manual for any specific moving instructions. If your refrigerator has leveling rollers you might have to change their position.
  3. One or two days before the move, empty and defrost the refrigerator.
  4. Disconnect and drain the icemaker.
  5. Empty and clean the drainage pad underneath.
  6. Wash inside walls, compartments and shelves, then tape shelves and drawers down.
  7. Tape the doors and the electrical cord.
  8. Pad the outside of the machine.

Armoires

  1. Empty all the shelves and drawers.
  2. Lock the doors and tape them shut. (Make sure you do not apply tape to delicate finishes that could get damaged).
  3. Pad the outside with blankets.
  4. Tip: If you are moving armories and other large furniture, you can use the empty spaces inside by filling them with some small items such as lampshades and pillows. Do not forget - you still have to pad them with bubble wrap or blank newsprint.

Beds

  1. Take the mattresses off the beds and cover them with plastic.
  2. Tape the rails together.
  3. Take apart the bed frames.
  4. Color-code or mark the individual pieces to make reassembly easier.
  5. Place all bolts and screws together in a plastic bag and tape it to the rails.
  6. Pad the headboard and the footboard.
